The album came in at number 157 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, and also appeared on the same chart in Denmark and Sweden, at number 60. However, some critics compared the album to Madonna’s work, saying that “the bold synthesizers sound like Madonna’s’ 80s era”.
True received positive reviews in general, welcoming the musical direction, and some critics declare that the EP “looks unlike anything that plays on the radio, but could still play on it” and praised “the strong nostalgia of the 1980s”. To promote the EP, Knowles went on tour, which went to the United States, United Kingdom, Holland, France and Germany. The single was released on iTunes a day later.

The first representation of the full track along with the video was released on October 1. The first single, “Losing You” was confirmed as the album’s first on September 2, 2012, during an interview with The Sunday Times in South Africa. The extended play was recorded in 5 cities, including Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Houston and New York. Musically, extended play is a tribute to pop music and R&B from the early 1980s, filled with sweet keyboard sounds and beats. Knowles described the EP as “eclectic with references from the 1980s and African percussion influences”. Regarding the musical direction of the album, she said that the inspiration came from the new wave and reported, “This is a dance album, but the lyrics of the songs can get very dark at times”. The EP is being released as a preparation for its future 3rd studio album. It is Solange’s first release by the label after leaving his contract with Interscope in 2009.
